Fake of Fortune on BBC Sunday 6 pm

Don't forget Fake of Fortune is back on Sunday night , 6pm BBC 1. Hosted by Fiona Bruce and art expert Phillip Mould it is a fascinating series taking works of art which have potential to be a treasure but as yet are unproven. Cut to a lot of detective work and expert opinion trying to find out if they are genuine or not. It is gripping television and totally addictive. If you didn't see last week catch up on iplayer

Fake or Fortune Vuillard iplayer episode

And for more information on the whole series past and present take a look at the official BBC website.

Apologies for the bad quality of this picture but worth a look. This is one of a pair of Vuillard which were sold on Ebay because the owner could not prove its history. This is not the one featured in the show but is still 'lost'. It is now worth approximately 250 000 pounds. Wonder who is sitting on this treasure?

Beginning of New Term 2014!

The start of a new term is always exciting and everyone was ready to get back to drawing and painting.
This term I started off with charcoal excercises using 2 figurative artists who's lifetimes overlap but who's styles are completly different. Matisse, one of the fathers of modernism and Hammershoi, a Danish artist who's influences include Vermeer.
I wanted my students first to start with a line drawing so turned to a sketch by Matisse. Very stylised with beautiful flowing lines. (Much discussion was had on whether she was naked or not!!
Good for hand to eye co ordination! Then I wanted them to look at shading and proportion using not only the meassurements of the figure but the room and objects in it to help them and gave them a painting by Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershoi. They could use the painting, urn and dado rails to help measure out the figure. Also they could have fun with the dark dress.

Some examples of their work are below.
Also some went on to experiment with charcoal further with trees and flowers, looking at tonal values and negative spaces. It was fascinating to compare the different styles and to see how everyone handled a medium they don't usually use. I think you will agree that they all did an AMAZING JOB!

Five Richest Ballet Dancers in the World

Fun and Interesting article about the five richest ballet dancers. Some you've heard of some you may not have!! I am not sure entirely accurate though as Michail Baryshnikov for example would have made some of his fortune through TV and Film, not necessarily dance.
